MEET MIKE, THE OWNER
On retiring from public service in 2012 I became the full time care taker of my wife , Mary, who had developed Alzheimers.
During that time I purchased my first pistol, took classes to learn how to safely operate and shoot it, and started shooting in the backyard of my 5 acres as a means to reduce the stress of being a 24/7 care giver.
After Mary’s death eight years later, I pursued classes necessary for becoming a firearms instructor in basic pistol and advanced pistol self-defense courses, including NC Concealed Carry.
This allowed me, in a new post-retirement endeavor, to continue my love of teaching others. I have found that there is no greater satisfaction than having a positive impact on someone’s life, and especially to teach them skills that boost their confidence, sense of achievement, and in the case of self-defense, their survival.
Having seen the various backyard facilities used for firearms instruction, I decided to build a facility that offered a better learning environment.
In July 2024, after years of planning, meeting county zoning and permit requirements, and construction, Blueberry Range opened. I believe the photos on this web site show the realization of my vision of a better learning environment for firearms instruction and practical training and application of the skills a student learns.
My Philosophy
I believe every student deserves to receive firearms education and training appropriate for the student.
In my former work life I earned many certificates in information security and taught those concepts to other information systems personnel. I earned a CERTIFIED INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDITOR CERTIFICATION IN WHICH I APPLIED THE PRINCIPLES A ASSESSING THE SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT AND ITS RISKS, AND ADVISED ON MEASURES NECESSARY for REDUCING/MITIGATING THOSE RISKS.
I apply the same principles in assessing the environment in which the student lives and works, the risks associated with them, the students lifestyle and physical capabilities and learning style.
Based on this assessment I develop a cost-effective plan with the student for implementing measures for their security, including any firearms (or alternates) and education and training in them.
I do not believe a one-size-fits-all approach is in the best interest, and ultimately safety, of the student.
